  • DOGS traveling from SHANGHAI to US

We are a family relocating from Shanghai to US with our 2 dogs. Need help from someone with info who has recently travelled since the requirements vary from agent to agent and the costs add up and up. Just need to know if United airlines in Pudong airport accept dogs as excess baggage and what are the requirements needed both for the airline, airport and US arrival. Anyone with some info to share?

Annie - United Airlines does not offer checked baggage services; only in-cabin and through their PetSafe program, which is equivalent to air cargo. To fly, your dog must have proof of rabies vaccination and a health certificate issued within 10 days of flight. You will need to produce these documents when entering the US. Your dogs will also need a screwworm exam between one and five days of entry to the US. To leave China, your dogs must be microchipped then rabies vaccinated at an official animal vaccination hospital in the PRC and must have the official “Animal Health and Immunity Certificate” (vaccination red book). The vaccination must be administered more than 30 days but not more than one year prior to international travel. No more than 7 days prior to travel, pets must be examined and obtain an Exit Health Certificate from a designated government quarantine hospital.

Thank you Jason for the info. We have changed airlines to China Eastern since other people suggested it, and it has been great. It is easy to take your dogs but the information is not available to everyone, so hope that people research a lot before giving up and paying ridiculous amounts for something that is a must for pet owners.
