Airline pet statistics?

Found some good information [URL="http://www.petflight.com/pet-incidents"]here[/URL] about incidents involving pets on airliners. Actually makes me feel much better about the possibility of flying with my dog in the baggage hold.

What I'm trying to learn is the total number of pets flown per year. Haven't found those numbers yet. Any suggestions as to where I might find them?

Any airlines allow pets to travel as long as it had a legal travel documents.

I suppose it is scary to look at the deaths and injuries that occur during flights, but being able to see the amount of pets transported vs. the amount of pets that are lost, injured or die can ease a bit of that fear. I think that with an older animal is at a much higher risk of injury or death due to the stress that can be associated with traveling so owners really need to consider whether or not it is worth the risk to take an older pet with them on a flight.

Pet food imported with pet owners must be sealed in commercial packaging (un-opened) indicating either Canadian or US country of origin.

I have been reading on-line about pets traveling in cargo because we have a dog coming to us from Utah to MI. I am less and less sure I'm willing to fly him and contemplating a looonnnng drive instead.

Air travel isn't safe for pets. If you must fly your pet, choose the cabin. Take precautions when bringing your pet through airport security and be aware of the dangers of flying your pet in a cargo hold.
