• Importing a puppy to Hawaii from mainland USA.

Aloha. I am trying to import a puppy to Hawaii from Georgia. This website posts that a puppy should be able to be brought in through the 5 day or less program by 10 months of age. My breeder's veterinarian in Georgia (where the puppy is) is telling us it will be at least a year and four months due to the rabies vaccine being an annual vaccine. How did this website arrive at 10 months instead of a year and four months? Advise needed, thank you.

Re: Importing a puppy to Hawaii from mainland USA.

Bella@59 - if the process to enter Hawaii is followed according to regulations (, the initial rabies vaccination can be administered at 3 months of age. The second vaccination cannot be administered prior to 90 days after the first vaccination. There is a 4 month wait after the second vaccination. Hence the 10 month minimum. Here are Hawaii's reference to puppies and kittens: "Due to the minimum amount of time needed to prepare a puppy or kitten to meet the requirements of the 5-Day-Or-Less program, a puppy or kitten will be about 10 months of age by the time the preparations are completed. Puppies and kittens not able to meet all of the requirements for the 5-Day-Or-Less program will be quarantined for 120 days."

Just wanted to post an update here in case anyone in the future finds this. Puppies/kittens can now be brought in as you as 6 months, according to the Hawaii DOA:
