Tourist travel to/between USA & Canada?

Hi, We are planning to take a 6 month long holiday in USA & Canada & would like to bring our dog ( a medium sized cocker spaniel) along.
As a tourist, is it possible to bring your dog to USA or Canada? Can we cross the border between USA & Canada by road?
We have all the vaccinations up to date, including rabies. Will the border control accept an overseas health/rabies certificate?
Any info from people who have undertaken a similar trip would be most welcome!

You will need proof of current rabies vaccination to move your Spaniel between the US and Canada. Health certificate is good as long as one language is English.
