  • Holidays in France with our SBT Buddy - can we?

    Hi
Can anyone advise how we are likely to be received travelling with our SBT by car to holiday in France. He's a gorgeous rescue dog with no pedigree papers but vet assures us he's full SBT, small dog. Can we use beaches? Does he need a muzzle when out and about etc. Any accommodation suggestions would be appreciated.
    Many thanks

Calnal - France restricts the import of the following breeds without pedigree certification: Pitt Bull Terriers, Rottweiler, and Staff Terriers. These breeds must be a registered pedigree. Crossbreeds are not permitted: Mastiff and Japanese Tose Inu. Staffordshire, American Staffordshire, Rottweiler and Japanese Tosa can be imported to France as guard dogs with pedigree papers.

Hi, do you know if a Pet Passport is sufficient certification for a holiday visit?
Is there a difference between a Staffordshire terrier and a Staffordshire bull terrier?

Calnal - if you are entering France from another EU Member State, then your pet's EU Pet Passport will be accepted. It must reflect proof of a current rabies vaccination administered after a microchip was implanted an no sooner than 21 days before travel. If you are entering France from outside of the EU, see here for requirements: http://www.pettravel.com/immigration/France.cfm.

A Staffordshire terrier is not an appropriate breed for a dog. It could be a shortened form for an American Staffordshire Terrier or an Irish Staffordshire Terrier or a Staffordshire Bull Terrier. These are all different breeds. What breed is your dog?

Hi Susan, thanks for your response, he's a 2 year old Staffordshire Bull Terrier. We had him from a rescue centre hence we have no pedigree papers, the rescue vet confirmed his breed and approximate age and would issue the pet passport. He is chipped to us and would have any necessary vaccinations, treatments before travel.

We hope to travel with him from UK to France via Eurotunnel. Do you think we would have any problems in taking him?
Is the worst that could happen being refused travel or entry on arrival - I have no idea of the process other than the help on forums.
Would he have to be when muzzled out and about in France?

Cal - according to France's regulations, any dog of the type known as the Staffordshire terrier cannot enter France without a pedigree. That said, we would reference a detailed post by a respected website on personal experience with traveling to England from France and back on Le Shuttle with a pet. Especially interesting are the comments on returning. http://www.dogjaunt.com/2013/11/taking-a-dog-into-and-out-of-england-on-the-eurotunnel-le-shuttle/ We must comment that we always quote the law and always advise people to become very familiar with it because the consequences could be severe. As this is a public forum, we must state that we would not encourage you to disregard the laws. We thought that this personal experience could be of some benefit to you. You should confirm with a Border Inspection Post whether it will be permitted to import your Staffordshire Bull Terrier. You can find their contact information here: http://ec.europa.eu/food/animals/vet-border-control/bip-contacts_en.

                    Hi

I've finally found some info on the French customs website regarding Staffies entering France. The breed 'label' is confusing though, I won't be risking it. the following links are to the English translations.

More about Staffies living in France. Border Inspection Posts are responsible for screening dogs entering the country. You can also find information here (we used Google Chrome for translation) http://www.diplomatie.gouv.fr/fr/services-aux-citoyens/preparer-son-retour-en-france/formalites-douanieres/article/animaux-domestiques-retour-en-france

Scroll down to importing Category 1 and 2 dogs.

I think that we must draw up a sort of lexicon to know which race is the purest.

I think you need to have a certificate of the entrance with your dog from France government, without this you can travel with your dog in France.
